The Takao Area (May 22nd)

 Calanthe discolor (Ji Ebine).
I made it for their prime time this year!

I hiked around the Takao area to see some orchids.
I found several patches of Calanthe discolor (Ji Ebine) flowers in their prime.
I saw quite a few Cephalanthera falcata (Kin Ran), but most of them were already fading.
I checked how the Dendrobium moniliforme (Sekkoku) flowers were doing, and they were just starting to bloom.

Sarcochilus japonicus (Kaya Ran).

Sarcochilus japonicus (Kaya Ran).
It was my first time to see this kind of orchid.

Cremastra appendiculata (Saihai Ran).

Cephalanthera longibracteata (Sasaba Gin Ran).
I found the only one.

 Cephalanthera falcata (Kin Ran).

This kind has amazingly bright yellow flowers.

 Calanthe discolor (Ji Ebine).
The biggest patch on that day!

Oberonia japonica (Youraku Ran).

Viola maximowicziana (Ko Miyama Sumire).

The Hybrid Violet

Viola phalacrocarpa Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Aso Kikuba Sumire).
The hybrid between Viola phalacrocarpa (Akane Sumire)
and Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Higo Sumire).

Here are the pictures of an interesting hybrid of violet.
It had six flowers blooming this year!

The flowers looks like pretty much like the ones of Viola phalacrocarpa (Akane Sumire).

There were 3 plants.
This one finished blooming.
The leaves are interesting, eh?

The leaves and stems have tiny hair.

Lots of tiny hair in the center of the flower.

Bombylius major (Major bee-fly).

This picture was taken 2 days after I took the ones above.
The colors were already fading and one flower out of six was finishing.

Ogouchi Pass, Okutama (May 11th)

Viola hirtipes (Sakura Sumire).

I went to Ogouchi pass from Okutamako to find some violets.  I found quite a few of Viola hirtipes (Sakura Sumire) and Viola violacea var. makinoi (Makino Sumire) on the ridge to Ogouchi pass.

I started the hike from the Ogouchi dam at Okutamako.

The sky was pretty clear.

Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Higo Sumire).
I found some leaves of this kind of violet, but I found only one flower blooming.

Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Higo Sumire).
Maybe it was too early or too late for them?

The greens were amazing on the ridge.

Viola violacea var. makinoi (Makino Sumire).
There were quite a few of them on the steep slope on the way to Ogouchi pass.

Viola violacea var. makinoi (Makino Sumire).

Viola hirtipes (Sakura Sumire).
The first one I found today!
