Koishikawa Botanical Garden, Hakusan, Tokyo (March 29th)

Cherry blossom.

Today we went to Koishikawa Botanical Garden to see the cherry blossoms. Soon after we entered the garden, we found some small violets on the ground. It was Viola diffusa (Tsukushi Sumire), which we both had never seen before. I got the information last year from the internet about these violets somehow live in this garden even thought they originally grow in Kyushu and Okinawa. The cherry blossoms were in their peak and lots of visitors enjoyed having party under the trees.

We went to Mt. Takao to see if any violets were blooming yet. At the No. 6 trail we found lots of white flowers of Chrysosplenium album var. stamineum (Hana Neko-no-me). And we also found Viola bisetti (Nagaba-no-Sumiresaishin), Viola tokubuchiana var. takedana (Hina Sumire) and Viola eizanensis (Eizan Sumire). Soon we will be busy to go out to find more and more violet flowers.

Yoshino Baigo, Hinatawada (March 22nd)

Ume no Kouen at Ome city.

We went to see the plum blossom garden from the Hinatawada sta. in Ome city. This whole town is famous for plums and lots of farmer's yards open to the visitors in this season. First, we stopped by the JA store to get some mustard greens and Umeboshi (pickled plum) made by the local farmers, and then headed to the main plum garden. There were lots of people enjoying the amazing scenery filled with plum blossoms. The garden is located on the hills and the whole hills are covered with white and bright pink, smoky pink, and dark red blossoms of plums. After having lunch there, we walked down to the Futamatao sta. following the stamp rally.

Prunus campanulata (Kanhizakura)

Today we went to Jindai Botanical Garden to see the plum blossoms. At the pond in the garden we saw 2 Kingfisher birds. They must live in the garden. Some of the cherry blossoms were already blooming. At the plum garden the peak of the flower was passed already, but quite a few people were still enjoying the flowers. We found one little violet blooming under the plum tree.
