Oze Trip, Part 6 (July 10th)

Eriophorum vaginatum (Watasuge) and Hemerocallis dumortieri var. esculenta, aka Hemerocallis middendorffii var. esculenta (Nikkou Kisuge, Zenteika) at the Kenkyuu Mihon-en at the Yamanohana area.

Here are the pictures taken at the Kenkyuu Mihon-en, which has nice and short walking trail at the Yamanohana area.

Veronicastrum sibiricum (Kugai-sou).

Viola kamtschadalorum (Ooba Tachitsubo Sumire).

Eriophorum gracile (Sagisuge).

Iris laevigata (Kakitsubata).

Iris laevigata (Kakitsubata).

Eleorchis japonica (Sawa-ran, Asahi-ran).

Hemerocallis dumortieri var. esculenta, aka Hemerocallis middendorffii var. esculenta (Nikkou Kisuge, Zenteika).

Pogonia japonica (Toki-sou).

Eriophorum vaginatum (Watasuge).

Dear Kazuya,

I hope you do not mind me contacting you but in searching the internet for images of Viola blandaeformis and Viola kamtschadalorum I found great images of yours on your this website which I would be interested in using for ARKive, if you would like to become involved.

ARKive - www.arkive.org - is a unique conservation initiative.

Films, photographs and audio recordings of the world’s animals, plants and fungi are being gathered into one centralised digital library. To date we have created digital multi-media profiles for over 12,000 species, digitising and storing more than 60,000 still images and over 150 hours of moving footage. These important audio-visual records are being preserved and maintained for the benefit of future generations and are being made available via the ARKive website.

I am able to send some more detailed documentation that will tell you a lot more about the ARKive project should you provide an email address. However, in summary:

• It is ARKive's current primary aim to compile audio-visual records for the 19,000-plus species currently threatened with extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

• We are looking for media (moving footage, still images, audio) to depict each species' life history as comprehensively as possible. In order for us to achieve this aim we need help from as wide a variety of donors as possible and would like to be able to add you to our list of contributors.

• The ARKive website acts as a showcase for image providers, displaying copyright and contact details with every image and links to each media donor's own web activities.

See examples of species which have been ARKived at www.arkive.org.

Please let me know if you have any queries. I am contactable at the below email address.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,

Rebecca Taylor

Thank you for your comment, Rebecca.

As my partner, Daniel, have responded to your e-mail, I can donate my images of Viola blandaeformis and Viola kamtschadalorum.

He will let you know the access to the thumbnail catalog of those flowers so that you can choose which images you want.
When you figure out which ones you want to use for ARKive project, let us know by e-mail and we will send the original size images.

I'm just wondering why you picked those 2 species. I know Viola kamtschadalorum grows in pretty limitted area in Honshu area, Japan, but is not so rare in Hokkaido, Japan, although Viola blandaeformis is not really rare here in Japan.

Anyway, if you want to know where we found these species, we can let you know, too.

Kazuya
