The Akigawa Area (April 7th)

Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire).

Today I went to the Akigawa area to see Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire) flowers.
The trail was quiet and I met only one couple hiking.  It must have been a little early for Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire) flowers, so there weren't so many yet, but I found quite a few flowers blooming already.

Somewhere in Tama Area (April 12th)

Akigawa River.

Today we went to some trail near the Musashi-itsukaichi area to see some Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire) flowers. It was a little bit too late to go there this year, so we found quite a few plants of the violet after flowers. Still, we could find some flowers of the violet and also another beautiful violet; Viola obtusa (Nioi Tachitsubo Sumire). Some of them might be the hybrid of this kind and Viola grypoceras (Tachitsubo Sumire), but it is too difficult for us to identify exactly.

It felt really nice to walk under the beautiful greens with nice breeze.

Somewhere in Tama area (April 5th)

Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire)

Today we went to some hills at the Tama area, where we saw the nice patches of Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire) flowers last year. They were blooming this year, too. And we notice that quite a few Cymbidium goeringii (Shunran) flowers there, too. Today we found lots of kinds of violets, but Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Higo Sumire) was not blooming yet.

Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire)
Pretty tiny one...compare with the size of acorn.

Viola phalacrocarpa (Akane Sumire)

Viola obtusa (Nioi Tachitsubo Sumire)

Viola grypoceras (Tachitsubo Sumire)

Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Higo Sumire)
Interesting shapes of leaves.

Nishi Tama Area (April 7th)

Cymbidium goeringii (Shunran)

We went to the same spot that I saw Viola violacea (Shihai Sumire) the other day. This time we found quite a few Cymbidium goeringii (Shunran) flowers beside the trail, which I didn't notice them at all the other day. We also found some Viola obtusa (Nioi Tachitsubo Sumire) here and there, which have nice fragrance on the flowers. At the end of the trail the big surprise was waiting for us. We happed to encounter some Viola chaerophylloides f. sieboldiana (Higo Sumire). It was first time for us to see that violet.

Their flowers are smaller than Viola eizanensis (Eizan Sumire).

It has really interesting shaped leaves.
