Grizzly Bears (September 3rd)

 

Ursus arctos horribilis (Grizzly Bear).

 On the morning of the second day of our trip, we found a mother and three cubs of grizzly bear near Eagle Summit on the way to Circle.

They were so busy eating breakfast that we were able to watch them for a while.

Eagle Summitからハイウェイの終点であるCircleまで行ってみようということで、

Eagle Summitの駐車場を出て間もなくして熊の母子に遭遇しました。

しかも小熊が3匹も！

母熊のそばで一生懸命、ベリーか何かを食べていました。

 

They were right by the highway.

We were watching them behind our rig.

ハイウェイのすぐ側に黒い点を発見。

 

First they were look like this from the car window.

小熊でした。

 

しかも3匹も小熊がいる！ 

 

遠めだと可愛く見えるけど、

母熊の目がちょっと怖いです。

Eagle Summit (September 2nd & 3rd)

We went to Eagle Summit to see some fall colors.
We saw quite a few caribou there for the first time.

フェアバンクスから100マイルほどの所にあるEagle Summitにまた出かけてきました。
今回は、ここで初めてカリブーを見ることができました。

A family of caribou nearly approached the wayside of Eagle Summit. 

駐車場のすぐそばまで降りてくることもありました。

 

We saw many caribou on this flat top near Eagle Summit.

 

We parked our rig at the wayside and stayed there for two nights.

 

We saw a band of northern lights on the first night at the wayside.

 

We found some caribou on the ridge the next morning from the wayside.

 

They came down pretty close from the wayside.

 

Some of them got beautiful antlers.

We were able to see many caribou now and then during our stay at Eagle Summit. 

こんな感じで、稜線上をうごめくカリブーの群れを

ちょくちょく目にしました。

移動のルートになっているようです。

a group of caribou is on the ridge near the center of this picture.

You can tell how close they are from the highway.

Table Top Mountain (Part 2) (July 8th & 9th)

Here is the second bunch of pictures taken on our hike on Table Top Mountain.

Not many kinds of flowers remained blooming, but we found quite a few of Campanula lasiocarpa (Mountain Harebell or Alaska Harebell) and Aconitum delphiniifolium (Larkspurleaf Monkshood or Northern Monkshood) flowers blooming.

On the way down from the top, we saw a huge owl.  It was much bigger than the ones we saw on the way up.

After hiking, we went to Ophir Creek Campground and stayed there for a night.

The campsite was pretty close from the creek and nice and quiet.

We stopped by at the Chatanika river on the next day and fished a arctic grayling.

It was so delicious!

見られる花の数は大分少なくなりましたが、イワギキョウやトリカブトはまだたくさん咲いていました。

下山途中には、また別の種類のフクロウに遭遇。登りの時に見た種類よりもずっと大きなフクロウでした。

この日は、近くのOphir Creekキャンプ場にて車中泊。近くに川があってスポーツ・フィッシングを楽しめます。ただしキャッチ・アンド・リリース。翌日、帰り道に別の川に寄って釣りをしたら、1匹だけグレイリング（カワヒメマス）を捕まえられました。釣りの許可証を手に入れてから、お初の釣果…おいしかったです。

2つのピークの間にある鞍部にて。

ウサギギクがまだ残ってました。

ミヤマハナシノブの仲間。

黄色バージョンのヨコヤマリンドウがまだ咲いていました。

There was no obstacles to block our view all around from the peak.

カラフトフクロウという和名が付いているようです。

すぐ側をバサッと横切ったので驚きました。

We stayed at Ophir Creek Campground.

この辺りで自分たちが度々使っているキャンプ場は州が管理しているものが多いのですが、

ここは連邦政府の管轄のようで、料金もだいぶ違ってました。

州管理のキャンプ場は15ドルに対して、

ここは6ドル、シニアだと半額の3ドル。

釣れたグレイリング（カワヒメマス）…大きな背びれが特徴。

水中を泳いでいいる時は紫がかっていてきれいです。

I made it into meunière.

マスの仲間なので、とりあえずムニエルにしてみました。

サーモン、タラ、オヒョウ、マグロ以外、こっちに来てから

食べられる魚の種類が限定されていたので、

おいしかったです。

岩魚みたいな肉質と味でした。
