Koishikawa Botanical Garden, Hakusan, Tokyo (February 16th)

Botanical Gardens, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo.
いわゆる「小石川植物園」です。

Today we went to The Botanical Gardens, Graduate School of Science of The University of Tokyo. This gardens are open to the public and are sometimes called "Koishikawa Botanical Garden". The botanical gardens originated as the Koishikawa Medicinal Herb Garden, which was established in 1684 by the Tokugawa Shogunate, so we can see many historic plants and ruins that indicate the long history of this gardens. The place was much bigger than we thought and lots of kinds of trees were there, most of which looked pretty old, too. At the Japanese garden the plum blossoms started blooming and we enjoyed lots of kinds of beautiful flowers of them and also their lovely smell.

「小石川植物園」として知られている東京大学大学院理学系研究科附属植物園に初めて出かけてきました。想像以上に規模の大きな植物園で、樹木を中心に沢山の種類の植物を見ることができました。都心にこれだけ変化に富んだ地形と植物が楽しめる植物園はそうそうないのではないでしょうか。ほとんどの植物に標識がついているのもすごく気に入りました。蔵書の植物画からのアンティークな絵を使ったグリーティングカードも販売されていて、私も何枚か購入してきました。園内では、タチツボスミレが少し咲き始めていて、オオイヌノフグリもいたる所で見受けられました。カンザクラも早くも花を咲かせていました。何と言っても日本庭園の梅もかなりの種類が花を咲かせていました。桜や藤、菖蒲とそれぞれの季節で楽しめるところだと分かったので、これからちょくちょく見に来ようと思いました。

通りをはさんだ小さな商店で入場券を販売しているというのもちょっとおもしろいです。


Cycas revoluta (Sotetsu)...This plant is an offshoot of the plant examined by Prof. Ikeno when he discovered spermatozoids of Cycas revoluta in 1896.

Prunus jamasakura var. praecox (Kanzakura)
寒桜が咲いていました。


Huge tree of Cinnamomum camphora (Kusunoki).
クスノキの巨木。立派な樹木が沢山あるます。


Ginkgo biloba (Ichou)... The spermatozoid of Ginkgo biloba was first discovered in seeds obtained from this female tree by Sakugoro Hirase in 1896. You can see lots of fruits on the ground under this tree.

Loropetalum chinense (Tokiwa mansaku)
トキワマンサク。樹形といい枝、葉の様子といい不思議な印象の木です。


Litsea coreana (Kagonoki)... Interesting bark.
カゴノキ。樹皮の模様が面白いです。


Lagerstroemia subcostata (Shima Sarusuberi)
シマサルスベリ。


Japanese garden. You can see the tall buildings far away.
