Koishikawa Botanical Garden, Hakusan, Tokyo (February 16th)

Botanical Gardens, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo.

Today we went to The Botanical Gardens, Graduate School of Science of The University of Tokyo. This gardens are open to the public and are sometimes called "Koishikawa Botanical Garden". The botanical gardens originated as the Koishikawa Medicinal Herb Garden, which was established in 1684 by the Tokugawa Shogunate, so we can see many historic plants and ruins that indicate the long history of this gardens. The place was much bigger than we thought and lots of kinds of trees were there, most of which looked pretty old, too. At the Japanese garden the plum blossoms started blooming and we enjoyed lots of kinds of beautiful flowers of them and also their lovely smell.

Nagaike Park, Minami Oosawa (February 11th)

Uragus sibiricus (Benimashiko, Long-tailed Rosefinch)

Today we went to see some birds in Nagaike Park walking down from the Nimami Oosawa sta. on Keio line. The park has a couple of ponds and we found some birds on the trail beside the stream between them. The most exciting thing was we found Uragus sibiricus (Benimashiko, Long-tailed Rosefinch) for the first time. The bird was really pretty. I had never seen such a pretty pink bird. We took lots of pictures of the bird with my friend, Daniel's camera. After coming back home, we had to sort out hundreds of pictures.

Sawai and Mitake (February 9th)

Tama river between Sawai and Mitake.

We went to Sawai today and tasted some Sake at the Ozawa brewery. Then we walked down the trail beside the Tama river to Mitake sta. On the way to Mitake we saw many birds even including Tarsiger cyanurus (Ruri Bitaki, Red-flanked bluetail)! For my camera I couldn't take nice picture of him, but my friend, Daniel took really nice one. The bird got beautiful blue feathers with yellowish orange side. We also found one flower of Viola grypoceras (Tachitsubo Sumire). It started snow around 2 pm after our lunch. We went back to Sawai sta. on foot then took the train to Mitake, and then took the Okutama holiday special train back to home.

Jindai Botanical Garden (February 3rd)

Prunus mume (Yae-Kankou)

Today we went to Jindaiji area again. Today is Setsubun (The day before the first day of spring.) and we Japanese throw some soy beans to keep the bad luck away and wish the happiness and good luck. The Jindaiji temple also held that event so we went to get some soy beans there even though it was snowing pretty hard all day. The botanical garden looked totally different from what we saw yesterday. It was covered with snow everywhere. It was really cold but I got a couple of small bags of soy beans and also did enjoy the beautiful plum flowers with snow.

Jindai Botanical Garden (February 2nd)

Prunus mume 'Shiro Namba' (白難波)

Today we went to Jindai Botanical Garden to see if any Shibateranthis pinnatifida (Setsubun-sou) flowers bloom yet. In the garden, there were more kinds of plum blossoms starting to bloom than the last time I went there. It was a little too early for the Adonis flowers yet, though... We found a small patch of Shibateranthis pinnatifida (Setsubun-sou) flowers beside a small creek in the garden, and we also happened to see 2 kingfishers flying over the creek. On the way back to the exit, we saw a Japanese green woodpecker, too.
